The international Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) set May 27 to pass its order on Chowdhury Mueen Uddin and Ashrafuzzaman Khan, the two expatriate war crime suspects of 1971
The tribunal led by Justice Obaidul Hassan on Wednesday set the date for the order as the two suspects did not give any reply to the tribunal despite publishing advertisement in the newspapers on May 15. Earlier, the tribunal directed the ICT registrar on May 12 to publish advertisement in the newspapers, asking the accused persons to appear before it.
After getting no response from the suspects even after publishing the advertisements, the tribunal decided to pass its next order in this regard on May 27.
The tribunal issued arrest warrant against the duo on May 2.
Mueen Uddin and Ashrafuzzaman are widely believed to have had masterminded the killings of intellectuals of the country just days before the victory of December 16, 1971 during the liberation war of Bangladesh.
Presently, Mueen Uddin is staying in the UK, while Ashrafuzzaman is in the USA.
Meanwhile, defence counsel Advocate Ahsanul Huq Hena completed cross-examination of Darul Islam, the prosecution witness-1 against war crime suspect Mobarak Hossain at the ICT-1.
The 73-year-old Islam gave his deposition against Mobarak, a former Awami League leader on May 20.
The three-member tribunal, headed by its chairman Justice ATM Fazle Kabir, set May 26 to hear the deposition of the next witness.
Mobarak is facing five charges of crimes against humanity during the liberation war of Bangladesh.
Mobarak was allegedly involved in genocide causing the death of 33 people at Akhaura in 1971.
The allegations of the killings of Ashu Ranjan Dey (Brahmanbaria), Abdul Khaleque and another unnamed person during the liberation war were also brought against Mobarak.
