Some 100 people illegally residing at Dhaka University’s Jagannath Hall were ousted Monday midnight.
The university authorities, led by the hall provost Ashim Sarkar, also sealed a total of 13 rooms in the hall during the drive at Govinda Chandra Bhaban.
The drive began at around 10:30pm and continued till 1:30am.
Witness said the university proctorial team and house tutors locked the main gate of the building and began checking students’ identification cards to prove their legality to stay in the halls.
The hall provost said the illegal boarders were driven out from the dormitory as the outsiders included former students, businessmen, job holders and students of other dormitories.
They led the drive following notices of illegal stay of the outsiders at the hall, he said.
He warned, ‘If any outsiders are found in the hall again, they will be handed over to police.’
Hall sources said illegal stay of the outsiders, loyal to ruling party-backed student wing, was due to indifference of the hall authorities and it disturbed the valid boarders of the hall.
DU acting proctor Amzad Ali said the university had directed the authorities of different halls to conduct drive against the outsiders.
