3 poachers held
Only three days after bird enumeration ended at Hakaluki Haor, more than a hundred guest birds fell victim to poison traps set by poachers.
Police has arrested three poachers in connection with the killing of birds at Sonapur village of Juri upazila in Moulvibazar district on Wednesday.
The arrestees–Sabul Miah, 35, Bachchu Miah, 32, Zakir Hussain, 22–hailed from Sadipur village of Kulaura upazila in the district.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Juri police in a drive arrested the trio and recovered 107 dead birds from their baskets, said Md Zahidul Haque, sub-inspector of Juri Police Station.
They came to Sonapur to sell the birds, he said.
The arrestees confessed they had killed the birds setting poison traps at Nagua-Dulia Beel of Hakaluki Haor under Kulaura upazila Wednesday morning, police said.
The bird enumeration was held at the haor from February 19 to 20 with financial support from the Integrated Protected Area Co-management (IPAC) project.
A team led by eminent bird researcher Dr Enam Al Haque conducted the enumeration.
