The fourth Syed Badruddin Hossain Smriti Natya Utsab began with great enthusiasm of the theatre activists on Friday at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Eminent poet-playwright Syed Shamsul Haque was present as the chief guest in the inauguration ceremony. Worldwide International Theatre Institute president Ramedu Majumdar, actor-director Mamunur Rashid, director general of Shilpakala Academy Liaquat Ali Lucky and secretary general of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation Jhuna Chowdhury were present as special guests in the ceremony, which was presided over by Syed Tasnin Hpssain, the president of the organising troupe Padatik Natya Sangsad.
Thespians Ataur Rahman and Keramat Ali Moula were honoured with Syed Badruddin Hossain memorial crests for their noteworthy contribution to theatre.
Padatik Natya Sangsad (TSC) has been organising the festival since 2010 to celebrate the troupe’s former president Syed Badruddin Hossain’s birth anniversary on April 11.
A founding member of the troupe, Badruddin Hossain was the president of Padatik Natya Sangsad (TSC) faction till his death.
The fourth edition of the Syed Badruddin Hossain Smriti Natya Utsab will feature eight plays in four days.
Two theatre productions were staged on the opening day. The host troupe staged Shakespearean classic Macbeth, translated by Syed Shamsul Haque and directed by Sudip Chakrabarty at the National Theatre Hall. It is 36th production of Padatik Natya Sangsad (TSC), which was premiered in last month.
Natyakendra, on the other hand, staged the Bangla version of Carlo Goldoni’s comedy ‘The Servant of two Masters’.
The 12th production of the troupe, titled Dui Je Chhilo Ek Chakor, has been translated and directed by Tariq Anam Khan.
A remarkable number of audiences watched the plays at the two venues.
‘Every year we organise the festival in memory of Syed Badruddin Hossain, who lead the troupe till his death. We also honour other senior theatre activists in the festival. More importantly, the audience get chance to watch quality theatre productions in a row during the programme,’ Syed Badruddin Hossain, the convener of the festival said.
