sparking mob protest
Reckless driving claimed the life of a private university student on Friday in front of Lab Aid Hospital in the capital, sparking off angry protests.
The deceased, Mustafizur Rahman, son of Nazir Hossain, was a student of World University in the city’s Dhanmondi area.
The police and witnesses said a speedy pick-up van knocked down Mustafiz when he was crossing the Mirpur Road at about 10:30am, leaving him critically injured.
Mustafiz was taken to nearby Lab Aid Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around 3:30pm.
Soon after the accident, the people, including students of the university, blocked the Mirpur Road and vandalised dozens of vehicles, disrupting traffic for more than half an hour from 4:00pm.
The pick-up van sped away after the accident, police said.
Dhanmondi police officer-in-charge Shah Alam told New Age that on information the police had rushed to the scene and persuaded the protesters to disperse.
A case was filed in this connection.
Road traffic accidents claim many lives every year in the country but the authorities concerned have failed to take any effective measures to control reckless driving which causes most of the accidents.
Reckless driving reportedly killed at least 10 pedestrians in Dhaka city in last one week.
