Popular director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s latest film Pipra Bidya is set to have its world premiere on December 08 at the 10th
Dubai International Film Festival.
It will be screened again on December 10 in the festival. The Dubai festival will begin on December 6 through the screening of Dutch-Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad’s film Omar and will end with US maker David O Russell’s film American Hustle on December 13.
Independent and established talents from Asian and African countries with a burgeoning cinema culture are given prominent standing in the festival’s programme and competition, reads the official website of the festival.
A total of 174 films will be screened in the festival in three sections including two competition sections: Muhr Emirati Asia-Africa and Muhr Emirati Arab.
‘Pipra Bidya will contest in the Muhr Asia-Africa segment of the festival along with nine “heavyweight films” from the Asian and African countries,’ Farooki told New Age.
Eight of the participants of the section have already won awards in different well reputed festivals.
A contestant for the award, Singaporean film Ilo Ilo, directed by Anthony Chan, won the Caméra d’Or in this year’s Cannes Festival and also grabbed the Golden Horse in the Taipei International Film Festival.
Two contestants of the Muhr Emirati Asia-Africa segment won awards at the Venice Film Festival: Taiwanese film Stray Dogs, directed by Tsai Ming-liang, won the Grand Jury award in the festival while Iranian film Fish and Cats, directed by Shahram Mokri won the Special Orizzonti in Venice.
‘I’m happy and proud that my film is getting its world premiere in an international film festival and is contesting in the prestigious Muhr Asia-Africa segment along with a number of good films from Asia and Africa. I hope the film lovers will get a different taste in the film,’ said Mostafa Sarwar Farooki.
‘It will be released later in Dhaka,’ Farooki added.
Pipra Bidya features the struggle of a young middle-class man to be established in the society. Noor Imran, Mukit Zakaria, Sabbir Likhon, Mohini Mou and Indian model-actress Sheena Chohan perform different characters in Pipra Bidya, produced by Impress Telefilm.
Director Farooki, managing director of Impress Telefilm Faridur Reza Sagar and Sheena Chohan will attend the festival in Dubai.
