PM for building modern democratic Bangladesh

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged all, irrespective of party and opinion, to work together to build Bangladesh as a modern democratic country free of hunger and poverty.
In a message on the occasion of Mass Upsurge Day ’69 to be observed today, the Prime Minister said her government is firmly committed to putting an end to all oppression, deprivation and discrimination among the people.
Hasina described the Mass Upsurge day as a significant milestone in the history of Bangladesh’s struggle for liberation as the great independence was achieved through the historic incidents of 1952 Language Movement, the charter of freedom-six-point and 11-point and 1969 Mass Upsurge.
She said Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the historic six-point demand in 1966 to free the Bengali nation of Pakistani colonial rule, oppression and deprivation which geared up the movement for independence.
“But the Pakistani rulers filed Agartala Conspiracy Case and confined Bangabandhu in a heinous bid to foil the movement. Students, workers, farmers and mass people organised a spontaneous and unstoppable movement against the case,” the PM said.
In a bid to oust the Pakistani military ruler, the struggling people on this day in 1969 brought out a procession breaking the curfew, but police opened fire and killed Matiur Rahman, a student of class IX, pushing the situation totally out of the control of the rulers.
In the face of mass upsurge, the then autocrat Aiyub government had been compelled to free all accused of the Agartala conspiracy case, including its main accused Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. “The mass upsurge in the struggle against misrule and oppression still today make us inspired,” the PM said.
Hasina recalled the precious contributions of all martyrs, including Shaheed Matiur, with gratitude and prayed for salvation of the departed soul.
