Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought the support of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President to declare February 21 as the ‘International Mother Language Day’. She requested the UNGA President to extend his support in Bangladesh’ s bid during a meeting with UNGA President Ambassador John W Ashe held at the United Nations Headquarters on Tuesday evening. Bangladesh is planning to place a proposal as a resolution to declare 21st February as the ‘International Mother Language Day’ in the current UNGA to protect and promote mother tongues as a vehicle of peace, culture and development.
PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Bijan Lal Dev briefed reporters after the meeting. Hasina said that in her previous term in 1999, Unesco declared 21st February as the International Mother Language Day.
Acknowledging the UN’s positive notion in adoption of Bangladesh’s various proposals at the UN in recent times, Hasina listed that the UN has adopted resolutions on ‘People’s Empowerment and Development Model,’ ‘Autism Spectrum Disorder’ as well as a resolution on the ‘Culture of Peace’ tabled by Bangladesh.
She also requested the President of the 68th UNGA to play his role so that Bangladesh could contribute more to the various departments of the UN alongside the UN peacekeeping missions.
