At least eight left-leaning student leaders and activists of Chittagong University were detained when they were on a strike on the campus to press home their demand of reducing the admission form price for undergraduate students in 2013-2014 session.
Police attack on activists of Progatishil Chhatra Jote, a combine of left-leaning student bodies, left at least eight students injured.
The activists said they had been staging demonstration for last three days demanding cancellation of the increase in admission form fees to Tk 500 from Tk 400 for the first year honours students.
Witness said police attacked the left leaning student activists when they tried to block the railway line in front of the university at about 8:15am. At one point police charged batons to disperse them leaving eight students injured.
Police also arrested Chhatra Union central committee vice-president Towhid Tipu, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front CU unit president Probal Majumder, Chhatra Union CU unit general secretary Rashedul Sami, and Chhatra Federation CU unit organising secretary Anwar Sadat and others from the spot.
Sujon Kanti Dey, Chhatra Federation CU unit activist, said police attacked their peaceful demonstration.
