A sub-inspector of Mirpur police station was sentenced to two year’s rigorous imprisonment by a Dhaka court on Tuesday for taking bribe from the complainant of a case.
The court also fined sub-inspector Rakibul Hassan Tk. 10,000 and in default, he is to suffer for two more months in jail. Judge Mohammad Motahar Hossain of the Special Judge’s Court-3 handed down the verdict in absence of Hassan.
The court said the punishment would be effective from the day of his surrender or arrest. According to the case statement, the accused demanded Tk 5 lakh as bribe from Ferdous Ara to arrest some criminals after she filed a case against five people on December 3, 2010.
Following the demand, Ferdous Ara gave Tk 15,000 to Hassan the same day, but he demanded more money repeatedly over cell phone.
Later, Ferdous Ara appealed to the Anti-Corruption Commission authorities on December 7, 2010 for taking action against the police official for demanding bribes.
Later, a team of ACC officials caught SI Rakibul Hassan red-handed while receiving Tk 5,000 from the complainant at National Heart Foundation Hospital at Mirpur area in the city.
