A traffic policeman was burned to death and two others sustained injuries in a petrol bomb attack on a requisitioned bus at Bangla Motor in the capital Tuesday night. The policeman, Ferdous Khalil, 40, was son of Abdul Hamid Mandal of Nagervita under Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibanda. Constable Faizul Islam, 40, and the bus driver Bayejid Hossain, 30, were seriously burnt in the incident. Faizul sustained 14 per cent burn injuries over his body while Bayejid sustained four per cent burn. However, Faizul’s condition was critical as his respiratory system was damaged because of the burn injuries, physicians said. The injured were initially rushed to Razarbagh Police Hospital and later they were shifted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Witnesses said the bus carrying two police personnel approached to Bangla Motor area to pick others, who had finished their duties, to carry them to Razarbagh police line.
But the miscreants all of a sudden threw a petrol bomb at it and the bus caught fire around 11:30pm.
On information, two fire fighting units rushed to the
spot and doused the fire.
Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandaker and DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed, inspected the spot after the incident.
When inquired about the arson attack even after the opposition enforced blockade was over, IGP Khandaker told journalist that it is time to think anew about the prevailing situation in the country.
Those, who care about the country, should come forward and work towards creating a social awareness against such attacks, he added.
