Urging the two bickering political camps — Awami League-led ruling alliance and BNP-led opposition alliance — to reach a consensus, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakiuddin Ahmad on Monday said they could reschedule the election if there is an understanding. “The Election Commission will make arrangements for everything if they (govt and opposition) reach a consensus,” he told reporters while leaving his EC secretariat office around 9:30pm.
“There’re many veteran politicians in our two political camps. So, we’re still hopeful of a political compromise. If the compromise comes even now, everything is possible. We urged two major political camps to come forward and reach a compromise,” Rakiuddin added.
Replying to a query, the CEC said the two major parties have to cave in to reach any consensus. “Both the parties will have to compromise for the sake of the country’s welfare and peace.”
Asked whether any opposition candidate filed nomination, the CEC said no probable candidate filed nomination paper under the banner of BNP. The deadline for nomination submission expired today (Monday).
In reply to a query whether it will be possible to hold election going beyond the January 24 constitutional deadline in case of compromise, Rakibuddin said, “Everything is possible if there is a compromise.”
