Awami League has decided not to bow down to the main opposition BNP’s demand for Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as the head of the election-time government to oversee the coming polls.
The Central Working Committee of Awami League (ALCWC) took the decision unanimously at a meeting held at the Ganabhaban Wednesday afternoon. When asked about the outcome of the meeting, AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam reiterated that the upcoming parliamentary election would be held as per the schedule announced by the Election Commission.
“Awami League will not allow any change in the poll schedule. The party wants that the upcoming election should be held on time and Awami League will participate in it regardless of any obstacle,” Ashraf said while talking to journalists after attending the working committee meeting.
Speaking about the decision of the meeting Syed Ashraf said, “The party leaders unanimously took the decision that AL will take part in the polls under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina for the sake of the country’s democracy.”
“There is no alternative to election for the continuation of democracy in the country and that’s why AL will take part in the polls,” he said.
When sought his comment regarding the Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad decision to boycott the elections, he said, “Let’s wait and see…”
