Bangladesh women’s cricket team captain Jahanara Alam said that the big-hitting ability of Indian team was the difference with her team during their ICC Women’s World Twenty20 opening match in Bangalore on Tuesday. Bangladesh lost the game by 72 runs as India restricted them to 91-5 after putting on 163-5 on the board. Bangladesh were looking to put some pressure on their opponents before player of the match Harmanpreet Kaur along with Veda Krishnamurthy changed the course of the game through some power-hitting.
Kaur scored 40 off 29 balls with three fours and two sixes while Veda remained unbeaten on 36 with two sixes.
‘Naturally the way they batted in the end was devastating,’ Jahanara told reporters at the post match press conference.
‘No matter how hard you try to build yourself up in the gymnasium you need to hit sixes at practice to be able to hit sixes in the matches.
‘Unfortunately we don’t have that in our team.’
The skipper also thought that if they could bundle the hosts under 125 runs it would have been a different game but it was not the same when they were chasing 164 to win.
‘Naturally our target was to keep them under 125 to 130 runs’, said Jahanara.
‘But when we went to bat we saw they bowled according to the situation and we just could not cope with that.
‘If we could hit some fours and sixes at the start there could be some other results but we could not manage it.’
Jahanara defended her decision of bowling against a strong Indian batting line-up as she felt their chances lied only in it.
‘Naturally our strong point is our bowling and we felt why not give it a try as the weather and the wicket is different’, said Jahanara.
‘We missed some chances in the field that also went against us.’
However, Bangladesh are taking some positives from the game as they are looking forward to the tournament.
‘We can always take some positives like the way some of our bowlers bowled or the way two of our players batted,’ she said.
