Prices of essentials are continuing to skyrocket in the kitchen markets and grocery shops in Sylhet ahead of Ramadan, the month of fast for Muslims.
Sources in the city markets said prices of spices, vegetables, pulses and chickpeas increased by 40-80 per cent in the past three days.They said on Wednesday that the essential prices would continue to increase for one or two more days.
Talking to New Age, the retail traders blamed the wholesalers for the unusual increase in essential prices while the wholesalers blamed increased demand of goods on the occasion of Ramadan side-by-side insufficient supply.
It was seen after visiting several kitchen markets, including Kalighat, Bandarbazar, Ambarkhana and Kadamtali kitchen markets, that the green chilly was being sold at Tk 160 per kg on Wednesday, though price was Tk 60 only three days back.
Similarly, onion, garlic and ginger were being sold at Tk 50, Tk 70 and Tk 100 per kg respectively on Wednesday that were sold at Tk 38, Tk 55 and Tk 80 per kg three days ago, the market sources said.
