Peaking Power Plants
Project cost revised down to Tk 6,123.37cr
The cost of 820MW Peaking Power Plants project under the Power Development Board has been revised down to Tk 6,123.37 crore from original estimation of Tk 6,959.86 crore.
The revised project is likely to be placed in the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council, the government’s highest policymaking body headed by the prime minister, today to get approval, Planning Commission officials said.
The government will provide Tk 5,747.34 crore from its own resources as the project assistance from development partners to the project estimated at Tk 376.03 crore. The project assistance in the revised plan increased by Tk 247.81 crore from Tk 128.22 crore from the original ‘development project proposal’ of the PDB, the officials said.
The project implementation period has been increased to December 2013 from December 2011 as the project implementer, the PDB, was able to spent Tk 4719.49 crore or 67.81 per cent against the allocation until June 2012.
The government had approved the first DPP of the project on March 16, 2010 aiming at producing 820MW electricity by establishing 10 heavy fuel oil and high-
speed diesel Peaking Power Plants in 10 locations across the country.
The proposed locations were Ghorashal in Narsingdi for 200MW, Gopalganj, Hathazari and Dohazari in Chittagong for 100MW each, Bera in Pabna for 70MW, Faridpur, Baghabari in Sirajganj, Katakhali in Rajshahi, Shantahar in Naogaon and Daudkandi in Comilla for 50MW each to produce electricity.
The PDB on February 24 this year removed Ghorashal Power Plant project to produce 200MW of electricity involving the cost of Tk 1,080.30 crore from the list of the 10 proposed power plants.
‘So, the project cost of remaining nine power plants declined by Tk 826.49 crore from the original cost,’ a senior official of the Planning Commission told New Age on Monday.
But, the cost in the revised DPP for the nine power plants rose by 4.15 per cent to Tk 6,123.37 crore from original estimation of Tk 5,879.37 crore.
The nine power plants will generate 620MW of electricity after implementation of the project, the official said.
