A designated prosecutor on Thursday made his submission before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 seeking to start trial of detained Mir Quasem Ali, a policymaker of Jamaat-e-Islami, for his alleged crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, 42 years ago. “This is a very fit case as the prosecution has sufficient documents and oral evidence against Mir Quasem Ali, the then Chittagong district head of Al Badr, a vigilante group of Jamaat-e-Islami, over his horrendous acts in 1971,” said prosecutor Sultan Mahmud Simon.
Referring to the newspaper reports and other papers and documents, he told the tribunal that accused Quasem Ali, also a front ranking leader of Islami Chhatra Sangha (ICS) in 1971, had perpetrated various crimes against humanity like killing, looting, abduction, persecution, genocide, rape, and setting fire to the houses of unarmed civilians during the Liberation War in collaboration with Pakistan occupation army.
The war-crimes accused had also set up makeshift torture camps at different places in the port city.
