The government has asked all the 71 private universities to set up closed circuit cameras on their campuses to save students from the clutch of narcotics, Yaba in particular.
The education minister, Nurul Islam Nahid, on Wednesday old New Age, `According to media reports, the number of Yaba users has alarmingly been risen at the private universities in the recent days and that is why the private universities have been asked to set up closed circuit cameras on their campuses.’
He said that all the private universities were also asked to form committees
for counselling the students and to prevent them from taking narcotics.
There are nearly 4 lakh students at 71 private universities in Bangladesh.
According to a study conducted by the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, 64.8 per cent of the drug users in the country are unmarried, 56.1 per cent are either students or unemployed, and 95.4 per cent are smokers.
Authorities of the North South University, American International University, East West University, Independent University, Stamford University, University of Information Technology and Sciences, Presidency University, Asian University of Bangladesh, Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology, Uttara University, and Darul Ihsan University confirmed to New Age that they have received the education ministry directive and have taken necessary measures.
