Finds police probe; HR commission to go to HC
A police report has found “Rab source” Ibrahim Hawlader and his associates guilty of attacking Jhalakathi college student Limon Hossain on Eid day.
Ibrahim and his aides swooped on Limon and his mother and brother on August 20. For the assault, Limon’s mother Henoara Begum on the very night filed a general diary with police.
Sub-Inspector Halim, acting officer-in-charge of Rajapur Police Station, said after investigation, SI Badal Fakir submitted the report yesterday morning.
Limon, a college student, then 16, was maimed in shooting by a Rab team in March last year. Later, he had to have his leg amputated from the thigh.
The Rapid Action Battalion even filed two cases against him — one under the Arms Act and another for obstructing them from discharging their duties and attempting to murder and injure Rab personnel.
In another development yesterday, the National Human Rights Commission has decided to file a petition with the High Court demanding a judicial probe into the incidents centering Limon.
“I believe a judicial probe will find the cases filed against Limon false,” NHRC Chairman Mizanur Rahman told press at its office yesterday following a meeting with the commission members.
Once the judicial probe unearths truths, the commission would also file compensation case, he said, adding that they were always ready to provide full legal support to Limon.
In the afternoon of August 20, Henoara Begum in her GD said, the gang attacked Limon and his family members when the latter were taking pictures on Saturia-Idurbari road at Rajapur.
“Ibrahim beat up Limon and as my elder son Sumon and I tried to save Limon, Ibrahim and his associates also beat us,” she added.
On information, police rushed to the spot and rescued the trio.
Yesterday, SI Badal Fakir submitted his report against Ibrahim under sections 323 and 506(2).
Mojid Ali, Jhalakathi superintendent of police, said Assistant Superintendent of Police ANM Anwar Hossain will forward the report to the judicial magistrate court today for further action.
Ibrahim, also a witness in one of the Rab cases, filed a “murder case” with Jhalakathi Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court on August 23 against family members of Limon.
The accused in the case are Limon’s father Tofazzal Akand, mother Henoara Begum, elder brother Sumon Akand and maternal uncle Siddique Hossain and six locals.
Ibrahim in the case alleged that the accused beat his brother-in-law Forkan to death during a brawl with him.
However, police had sent the body of Forkan to Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital morgue, saying, “The body did not bear any injury marks.”
A postmortem report was yet to be submitted.
Local witnesses said Forkan died of heart attack on way to the spot where Limon and his family members were attacked.
Magistrate Nusrat Jahan had ordered the Rajapur OC to register the murder case after the court order reached the police station Sunday night, Sub-Inspector Halim told The Daily Star.
Tofazzal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rajapur Police Station, went Dhaka to give witness in a case and he would register the case after joining today, the acting OC said.
