Rahmatganj MFS, who barely avoided relegation last season, continued to defy the odds as they moved to joint top of the Bangladesh Premier League table with a 2-0 win over cash-rich Chittagong Abahani in Dhaka on Friday. Earlier in the first match of the day, Feni Soccer Club tasted their second victory in the league when they beat Uttar Baridhara 4-1.With the win, Rahmatganj are now sharing their top spot of the points table with Muktijoddha Sangshad KC and defending champions Sheikh Jamal DC with 12 points from six matches.
Chittagong Abahani remained on fourth position with 11 points from the same number of outings.
Mahbub Hasan Noyon and Congolese forward Siyo Zunapio scored a goal apiece for Rahmatganj.
The charges Kamal Babu boys went ahead with just sixth minutes into the clock when Noyon’s header found the back of the net following a Jatta Mustapha corner.
Rahmatganj keeper Samiul Islam Masum turned out to be best performer of the match as he saved his side on quite a few occasions.
Masum denied Ibrahim and Leonel Saint Preux’s back-to-back effort in the 10th minute before coming to the rescue of his side again in the added time of the first half as he blocked a short range header of Zahid.
The underdogs delivered a decisive blow when Zunapio scored the second in first minute of the injury time with a powerful drive from a counter attack.
In the other match, Feni Soccer came from behind to thrash Baridhara.
Midfielder Rohit Sarker gave Baridhara a 10th minute lead but Feni came back strongly with a brace from their Nigerian midfielder Uche Felix.
Akbar Hossain Ridon and Chowmrin Rakhain scored the other two goals to complete the rout.
This was Feni’s second win of the league which took them to the sixth position of the points table with eight points from six matches.
Baridhara, who made a positive start in the league, slipped to 11th place.
