Police submitted the charge sheet for the murder of Samiul Alam Rajon to the court, accusing 13 people, including the prime suspect Kamrul Islam who left the country for Saudi Arabia.
The investigation officer in the case, Suranjit Talukder, also Sylhet Metropolitan Police detective branch inspector, submitted the charge sheet to the court of metropolitan magistrate Shahedul Karim in the afternoon, 39 days after Rajon was beaten to death, court sources confirmed.
The IO brought allegations under the section 302, 201 and 34 of the Bangladesh Penal Code against the accused in the charge sheet, sources said.
SMP additional deputy commissioner Rahmat Ullah said two arrested suspects — Lipi Begum, wife of Kamrul’s brother Muhith Alam, and Ismail Hossain, have been excluded from the charge sheet as no evidence of their involvement with the murder incident was found in the police investigation.
He said Kamrul Islam was shown as prime suspect in the charge sheet. Other charge-sheeted accused are Muhith Alam, his brother Ali Haydar, Nur Ahmad alias Nur Miah, Dulal Miah, Ayaz Ali, Taz Uddin, Ruhul Amin, Mayna Miah, Shamim Ahmad, Pavel Ahmad, Firoz Ali and Asmat Ullah.
Rahmat Ullah told New Age that Kamrul, Shamim and Pavel have been shown fugitive accused in the charge sheet.
Eight out of 13 charge-sheeted accused, including Muhith Alam, Mayna Miah, Nur Ahmad, Ruhul Amin, Dulal, Badrul, Asmat Ullah and Firoz Ali, had given confessional statements to the court.
A group of some five youths, including Muhith, son of late Abdul Malik of Sheikhpara village, his brother Kamrul and Ali Haidar, and othersm beat Rajon to death on July 8 accusing him of theft when he went there to sell vegetables.
Rajon was the elder of two sons of microbus driver Sheikh Azizur Rahman of Bade Ali village at Kandigaon union under the sadar upazila in the district.
Later on that noon, local people caught Muhith after chasing him and his accomplices when they were trying to dump the dead body of Rajon at an abandoned place near Kumargaon Bus Terminal in the city and handed him over to the police.
Azizur went to the Jalalabad police to record a general diary as his son did not return home on that night after July 8 and then identified the body of Rajon at the Sylhet Osmani Medical Hospital morgue.
He also filed a murder case with the police accusing Muhith, 32, his younger brother Kamrul Alam, 30, and elder brother Ali Haydar, 34, and the market night guard Mayna, 45.
Following the statement extracted from Muhith, police recovered a video clip of Rajon being tortured by the perpetrators posted on Facebook, police said.
Kamrul left the country for his work place in Saud Arabia two days after the murder and the Saudi police arrested him from Jeddah on July 13.
