A milad mehfil was held on Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar, seeking the eternal peace of the killed and early recovery of the injured in Rana Plaza collapse, on Tuesday.
Some 2,000 people attended the milad jointly arranged by the Bangldesh Army and the Dhaka District Administration was held in an area stretching over one and a half kilometers.
Apart from victims’ family members, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka district Sheikh Yusuf Harun, Superintendent of Police Habibur Rahman, Savar UNO Kamrul Hasan Mollah and Brigadier Azmal Kabir were present , among others. Vehicular movement on the highway remained suspended during the milad which started from 12:45 pm and continued till about 2pm.
Family members of thousands of victims staged a demonstration demanding compensation just after the Milad. They, however, returned home after the Deputy Commissioner assured them of providing compensation.
The Dhaka district administration cordoned off the Rana Plaza site by erecting barded-wire fences around it, restricting people’s movement there. Police would guard the area till further direction from concerned authority.
The rescue operation at the site was declared as over on the 20th day of the operation on Monday. However, no body was recovered from the rubble on the concluding day of the operation. A total of 1,127 bodies were recovered from the disastrous building collapse till Sunday night. A total of 2438 people were rescued alive from the eight-storey building that crashed down on April 24.
