A Chittagong metropolitan magistrate court on Sunday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment and fined him Tk 50,000 for violating a female student in Chittagong.
The convict was identified as Nur Mohammed, 32, son of Abul Kashem, resident of Shah Mirpur area under Karnaphuli police station in the district.The judge, Md Rezaul Karim, of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 passed the verdict when the accused, Nur Mohammed, was produced in the court, court sources said.
According to the prosecution, Rezaul violated his cousin, a Class X student by alluring her with marriage, on November 21, 2001.
Later Nur refused to marry the girl.
The victim filed a written complaint with the Chittagong Metropolitan Court under the act of Woman and Child Repression on November 25, 2002, accusing Nur.
The court had asked the officer-in-charge of Karnaphuli Thana to investigate the incident.
The OC submitted the charge sheet against Nur on March 23 in 2003 and the court framed the charge on July 15, 2013.
Advocate Chandan Talukdar said the court handed down the verdict after examining all the records and deposition of nine witnesses among ten.
