A rare species of goose was spotted for the first time in the country in Hakaluki Haor of Moulvibazar district last Saturday.
A group of bird watchers led by eminent bird specialists Dr Enam al Haque and Paul Thompson have found the ‘lesser white-fronted goose’ on the concluding day of the two-day bird enumeration session at the haor.
“This species of goose has been detected for the first time in the country after the introduction of enumeration,” Dr Haque said.
Since the last year, the group has been conducting the enumeration attaching small satellite transmitters and rings to the legs and bodies of the migratory birds to monitor their movement, behaviour and locations.
Basir Ahmed, an officer of the Department of Environment at Kulaura of Moulvibazar district, told the reporters the enumeration is being held every year at Hakaluki Haor.
Representatives from The Bird Club and different non-government organisations and students of different universities were members of the enumeration team.
