The High Court on Wednesday quashed a defamation case against Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association’s chief executive director Syeda Rizwana Hasan and its lawyer Iqbal Kabir for serving a legal notice to a ship- breaking businessman for pollution.
The bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury and Justice Farid Ahmed pronounced the verdict after hearing filed by Rizwana and Iqbal seeking the case to be quashed.
Ship breaking company Mak Group’s manager Abdur Rouf Chowdhury filed the case with Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Court accusing Rizwana and Iqbal of damaging his company’s image and dignity by serving the legal notice in September 2010.
After hearing a petition filed on January 24, 2011 by Rizwana and Iqbal seeking the case to be quashed, the High Court had stayed the proceedings of the case and issued a rule on the plaintiff to explain why the case would not be quashed.
They also secured bail in the case.
The legal notice asked the government to take action against Mak Group for exporting toxic ship ignoring a High Court order.
It also cautioned the government and Mak Group not to take any move to export toxic ship from the country.
