Fire gutted an apparel factory in the capital’s Madartek area on Sunday afternoon.
However, none was severely injured in the incident.
The blaze broke out at the fifth level of Sisili Garments Factory Limited at Nandipara under Madartek in the capital on Sunday around 12:35pm, said Rafiqual Islam, assistant inspector of fire service.
Three people were injured as they tried to leave the place.
A total of 11 units of fire service worked together and put out the fire at around 3:20pm.
Salek Farazi, a security guard of the seven-storey factory, told New Age that fire originated at about 12:35pm at the warehouse on the sixth floor of the building, where cotton and clew were stored.
Mahbub Morshed, a director of the factory, said around two thousand people were working there at that moment.
He said the workers were trained properly to face such critical situation. ‘Besides, we had efficient fire safety which prevented casualties.
Fire Service officials were yet to ascertain the reason behind the blaze.
Since there were no electric lines in that floor, it is very hard to tell how the fire broke out, said fire service official Rafiqual Islam.
He, however, suspected that the fire might have originated from burning cigarette.
Billal Hossain, a construction worker, was injured as he jumped from the roof of the seventh floor which was under-construction.
‘Suddenly, I saw smoke on the sixth floor. Then I jumped to the nearby watercourse,’ said Billal.
Hafizur Rahma, a worker of the factory, said they were working on the second floor of the building. As they saw the blaze, they rushed to the emergency fire exit.
