The academic committee of Rajshahi University at an emergency meeting on Sunday suspended all the classes and scheduled examinations till December 31 due to agitation by controversially-appointed class III and IV employees.
No class or scheduled examination was held at the university as controversially-appointed class III and IV employees continued their indefinite strike for the second consecutive day on Sunday, demanding regularisation of their jobs, campus sources said.
The meeting was held Sunday morning at the residence of the vice-chancellor. Acting vice-chancellor Professor Mamnunul Keramat chaired the meeting.
The academic committee also postponed the viva voce of the admission seekers, selected for first year honours courses, till December 31 and asked them to collect information about next viva voce dates from the notice boards at respective departments. Several hundred admission seekers, selected for the viva voce, returned their home on Sunday after the postponement of the viva voce.
Controller of examinations Anwar Hossain, treasurer Professor Mozammel Haque, registrar Professor Muhammad Shafi, proctor Enamul Haque, students’ adviser Faridul Islam and provosts were present at the meeting.
The agitating employees along with a number of outsiders locked the main gate of the university since Sunday morning and laid siege to the administrative building.
They also went to different faculty buildings, deans’ offices and transport office and confined the officials and employees in the presence of a large number of policemen.
They stuck up posters on the gates of the administrative building, departments, deans’ offices and central library that read ‘indefinite strike is continuing’.
They also asked teachers, officers, employees and students to leave the campus. At around 12:00 noon, the employees staged demonstration in front of the administrative building.
The employees announced that they would continue with the strike until their demand was met. They held pro-Awami League teachers, vice-chancellor and University Grants Commission chairman responsible for non-regularisation of their jobs.
