Rajshahi University folklore students demanded quota under public service commission for those taking degrees in the subject.
To press their demand, the department students held a press conference at the university’s central cafeteria on Saturday in which Mahbub Hossain, a master’s level student was the main speaker.
They said while the folklore department was established in RU in 1998, other public universities, including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University and Islami University in Kushtia, were running related courses. The 203 colleges under National University also have folklore courses.
Having demanded that the different public institutions on language and culture, Bangla Academy, Shilpakala Academy, the district cultural academies among them, should employ them, they said as these institutions often recruited people with no folklore or other related background they performed poorly.
So the PSC should formulate rules so that people with degrees on folklore and related subjects can be in the recruitment priority of the government’s cultural institutions.
The students said they also submitted a memorandum to RU vice-chancellor Abdus Sobhan on April 2 and also sent by post its copies to the prime minister, education minister, University Grants Commission chairmen, PSC chair and National University VC.
The department’s master’s students Sazzad Hossain and Mehedi Hasan also
Spoke, among others, at the press conference.
