Angry students of the Rajshahi University on Thursday evening blocked the Rajshahi-Dhaka highway in front the university’s main entrance after a bus supervisor allegedly stabbed their fellow pupil.
Sources said that the bus supervisor of Tuhin Paribahan assaulted Anisur Rahman, a third year student of political science in Rajshahi University, over a trifling matter while he was coming from Sirajganj on Thursday morning.
Protesting the incident at around 4.30pm, the university students thronged the university’s main gate and were waiting for Tuhin Paribahan’s bus.
At around 5.00pm they attacked the bus when it was passing the main gate on its way to Dhaka with a load of passengers.
The driver, supervisor and their associates fled the place when the students when the students barricaded their bus.
The frustrated students continued their agitation, demanding exemplary punishment of the assailant.
At least two hundreds vehicles remained stationary on the both lanes of the road due to the barricades.
After hearing the news of the agitation, Rajshahi University’s proctor Professor Chaudhury Zakaria, along with a police contingent from Motihar thana, rushed to the spot and asked the students to withdraw and let the traffic move.
The students stopped their agitation after the proctor assured them that the guilty bus supervisor would be punished after talking with the leaders of Bus Owners Association.
The proctor told New Age that students had gone back to their dormitories and situation was normal.
‘We are trying to contact the leaders of Bus Owners Association to discuss the matter,’ he added.
Abul Khayer, officer-in-charge of Motihar thana, told New Age that extra policemen had been deployed at the main entrance of the Rajshahi University and the situation was under control.
