The Rajshahi University students staged a demonstration in front of the university’s administration building on Saturday protesting against the attack on them by the
police as they blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway on Friday protesting at the death of a fellow student in a road accident. Over a hundred students brought out a procession from the Momtaz Uddin arts building at about 11:00am and parading the campus streets, gathered in front of the
administration building to stage sit-in.
They raised a three-point demand to the university authorities including punishment to the attackers, deployment of traffic police at Binodpur, Kazla and the
university’s main entrance and speed-breaker in front of each gate on the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway.
The agitated students withdrew the sit-in programme as the RU vice-chancellor, Professor Mizanuddin, assured them of fulfilling the demands.
Earlier, on Friday the police fired rubber bullets on the students as they blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway following the death of Sabrina Jahan, a sociology
department second year student of the university, in a road accident in front of the university’s main entrance.
At least six students were injured in the clash.
