Bangladeshi pace bowler Rubel Hossain had a lengthy but successful operation on his injured right shoulder in South Africa on Friday, said the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Saturday.
‘He had an arthroscopy operation on his right shoulder that took nearly three hours and a half but it was successful,’ said Monirul Amin, a physician of the BCB.
‘After the operation he has been kept in the intensive care unit and if there is no serious problem then he should be released today [Saturday]. Our physio Vibhav Singh is staying there and keeping us updated about him on a regular basis,’ said Monirul.
Rubel had sustained injury in his shoulder during the Test series against Pakistan late last year and still played in a Bangladesh Premier League match only to aggravate his injury.
The right-arm paceman with a sling action was hurt while playing for Sylhet Royals against Barisal Burners in the BPL opening match on February 10.
He could bowl only two overs before walking off the field.
Joe de Beer, an internationally renowned orthopedic surgeon, conducted the operation on Rubel’s shoulder at the Cape Eye Hospital in Cape Town.
Monirul said that it will keep the 22-year-old out of the game for at least eight weeks, and if any complicacy arises then he will be out for action for six months.
‘It depends on the gravity of the operation and the way he does his rehabilitation. Usually in such cases the patient needs eight weeks’ rest but if it turns severe then he might be out for six month,’ said Monirul.
‘We still haven’t got the medical report and unless we get it, we cannot exactly say when he will return to action,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Tigers’ physio tweeted that Rubel Hossain is fine and hopes to be discharged from the hospital today.
‘Rubel is doing well after his operation today and is taking rest. He will be discharged tomorrow (today) from hospital,’ Vibhav tweeted on Saturday.
