Sheikh Russell moved to top spot in the points table with a 2-1 victory over Brothers Union in the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday after the Bangladesh Premier League resumed after a one and half month break.
Sheikh Russell came back from a goal down to stage a comeback win, thanks to goals from attacking duo Zahid Hasan Emily and Zahid Hossain after Yousuf Sifat, the young forward gave Brothers Union a surprise lead in the 19th minute.
With the win, Russell went top of the table with 29 points from 13 matches, one point ahead of Abahani Limited while Brothers remained in their previous position of seventh, stuck on 10 points from the same number of the matches.
Sifat gave Brothers a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when he scored from a placing shot from outside the box after receiving a square pass from Nigerian defender Adam Jankasa.
The Emily-Mamunul combination, which combined to script the winning goal in the Independence Cup final, gave Russell the equalizing goal in the 35th minute. Mamunul floated a curling corner from the right flank which Brothers goalkeeper Sobuj Das Roghu failed to judge properly and Emily was in the right position to head it in.
Zahid Hossain scored in the first minute after the break to give Russell a 2-1 lead with a magnificent finish after he received a delivery from a Mamunul free kick.
