A second-half strike by Moroccan forward Samir Omari guided Sheikh Russell KC to a 1-0 win over Farashganj SC in the Grameenphone Bangladesh League at the Kamalapur Stadium on Thursday.
Sheikh Russell, who finished third last season with 50 points, were the favourites against Farashganj, who they defeated 2-1 and 2-0 in the last year’s professional league. But this time the superior side played a haphazard football on the turf just like their inferior opponents.
None of the teams made any remarkable attack in the first half while Sheikh Russell created a few good scoring opportunities in the second half. Sheikh Russell’s Bangladeshi international Yusuf rattled the woodwork from his Ghanaian team-mate Moro Mohammed’s cross in the 59th minute.
The winning goal came from Sheikh Russell’s Cameroonian midfielder Jimgou Guy Charles’s effort when he provided a long cross from the left wing in the 67th minute for Samir to tap in.
Samir gave a good pass to Yusuf inside the penalty area in the 83rd minute but the national player failed to connect the ball.
Both the teams could have shared the spoils had not Sheikh Russel goalkeeper Mamun Khan blocked a Mamun Miah diving header from close after a corner kick in the last minute.
