Defending champions Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Mohammedan Sporting Club in their Bangladesh Premier League match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Wednesday. Russell registered the win after four matches thanks to their in-form striker Mithun Chowdhury’s brace. Wahed Ahmed put Mohammedan ahead in the 20th minute but Mithun struck twice to seal the eighth win for Russell.
With the win, Sheikh Russell remained in sixth place with 32 points from 24 matches while Mohammedan slipped to fourth position with their previous 38 points from the same number of outings. Muktijoddha Sangsad KC moved up to third place with a 1-0 win against Chittagong Abahani in Chittagong in Wednesday’s other match.
A fifth- minute strike by Mohammad Ibrahim confirmed full three points for Muktijoddha, who took their tally to 40 points from 24 matches while Chittagong Abahani, who conceded the defeat after four consecutive victories, remained stuck to eighth position with 22 points from same number of matches.
In the Dhaka match, Mohammedan took a deserved lead in the 20th minute through Wahed, who headed in his 13th goal of the league from Yousuf Sifat’s free-kick. But Mohammedan failed to maintain the lead as
Fazle Rabbi entered the box from the right and drove a low shot which was blocked by Mohammedan defender Tapu Barman and Mithun sent the rebounder home in the 30th minute to level the margin. Mithun scored the winner seven minute into the second half, placing a Mohammad Sumon cross.
