Irate students of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) vandalised over 50 vehicles at Agargaon area in the city following killing of a female student of the university in a road accident on Wednesday night. The chaos forced vehicular movement in the areas to a halt for one and a half hours causing severe gridlock in adjacent area and untold sufferings to hundreds of commuters.
Police said an unidentified passenger bus hit Rina Akter, 26, a PhD student of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, in front of the Election Commission Office at around 2.30pm. Local people immediately rushed critically injured Rina to Popular Hospital in Dhanmondi where she succumbed to her injuries at around 8:00pm on Wednesday. She hailed from Rangpur district
When the news of her death came to Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University campus, at around 9:00pm angry students instantly took to the street and went on a rampage and started vandalising vehicles and blocking the road from Bijoy Sarani to Agargaon.
They damaged over 50 vehicles, mostly buses. Sensing the trouble buses and minibuses entered into different alleys of the adjacent areas causing severe gridlock.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police opened the Bijoy Sarani to Agargaon road and vehicular movements resumed again at around 10:00pm.
Biplob Kumar Sarker, Deputy Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told The Independent, “Soon after the news spread the angry students of the university took the streets and vandalised scores of vehicles stranded on the road.
Maruf Ahmed, Inspector (Investigation) of She-e-Bangla Nagar Police station told The Independent, “On information, police rushed to the spot and quelled the stuation after assuring the angry students that stern action will be taken against the responsible driver.”
A tense situation, however, prevailed in the area and additional law enforcers were deployed to avert any further unwanted situation.
