Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali has criticised the government for arresting Bar Council Vice-president Advocate Khandkar Mahbub Hossain and demanded his immediate release. The SCBA president made the statements yesterday at a press briefing at the South Hall of the Supreme Court Bar building. The briefing was held soon after the law enforcers arrested Hossain, who is also an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, from the National Press Club area. “The government is moving forward towards implementing an autocracy in the country through the arrest of the BNP leaders after completing a farcical election on January 5,” Ali said.
He also alleged that the people have observed the government’s drama, which was played through the completion of the ‘farcical’ 10th parliamentary election, after putting the former prime minister Khaleda Zia in house arrest and detaining top BNP leaders. The SCBA president alleged that the government arrested the Bar Council vice-president as he was vocal against the ‘shameful and farcical’ election.
The law enforcers detained Khandker Mahbub Hossain from the capital yesterday at around 2.oopm when he was leaving the National Press Club after attending a discussion. During the discussion, Mahbub Hossain termed the 10th Parliamentary election as a ‘farcical poll’ and urged the people to resist the government as it did not get the public mandate to run the country.
Earlier in the day, pro-BNP lawyers brought out a procession at the Supreme Court premises in favour of the hartal called by the 18-party alliance demanding cancellation of the 10th parliamentary polls and holding of a fresh and inclusive election.
The lawyers threatened to continue their movement until the government holds fresh polls after canceling the 10th parliamentary election.
Meanwhile, pro-Awami League lawyers formed a human chain in front of the Supreme Court Bar building demanding resumption of judicial activities at the Supreme Court.
