The number of voters at present in the country is 8 crore 47 lakh 47 thousand 698, which is 36 lakh 89 thousand more than the last year’s total number of voters.
The number of voters in the country was 8 crore 10 lakh 58 thousand 698 during the 9th parliamentary election held on December 29 in 2008. More than three and a half million fresh voters were added to the electoral roll through the recent countrywide updating of the voter list.
Election commissioner M Sohul Hussain said these while talking to journalists at his office yesterday following the publishing of draft voter lists of 17 districts including the coastal areas of the country.
“The Election Commission (EC) will start holding the countrywide Union Parishad elections from May and we will start the polls from the coastal areas. That is why the commission has published the draft voter list of this areas first,” the election commissioner said. The EC yesterday published the draft voter lists of Sylhet, Hobigonj, Sunamgonj, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Noakhali, Feni, Lakkhipur, Chandpur, Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Barisal, Pirojpur, Potuakhali, Jhalkhathi and Borguna districts.
The final voter list of these districts will be published on April 15 following some formalities like voters’ claims and objections, if any, about the draft electoral roll and resolution of those queries. The EC will announce schedule of the union parishad polls of these areas on April 20, Sohul added.
“In the second phase the commission will publish the draft electoral roll of 20 districts on March 15 and publish the final list on April 22. In the third phase the commission will publish the draft voter list of 27 districts on March 22 and the final list of these areas will be published on April 29,” the election commissioner said.
The EC has published the draft voter list of Dhaka City Corporation on February 3 and Bhola-3 constituency on February 17.
