Selim wins award in negative role
Popular actor-director of small screen Shahiduzzaman Selim has been named best actor in negative role in the National Film Award 2012 for his acting in Redoan Rony’s film Chorabali, according to information ministry’s gazette issued on February 7.
Selim played the role of Ali Osman, a mafia boss, in Chorabali, which also stars Kolkata-based actor Indraneil Sengupta and Bangladeshi actress Jaya Ahsan. In fact, the magnetic and compelling role of the mafia don enacted by the seasoned actor is the secret of his winning the first ever national recognition.
Selim, however, has several awards by private organisations such as Meril-Prothom Alo Award for his acting career over two decades in the small screen.
‘I am really happy to win the national film award, the highest accord and recognition for an actor in Bangladesh,’ said Shahiduzzaman Selim told New Age.
‘Throughout my acting career I always tried to become a complete actor. I love to perform in any “important” character, positive, negative or comic,’ he added.
Selim further said after the release of Chorabali he got many offers from the Dhallywood-based directors. But, he declined them considering the characters he was offered were ‘stereotypical’ and had little chance to demonstrate his spelling skills.
‘It does not mean that I don’t want to work in Dhallywood films. I always look for challenging characters,’ said Selim.
Shahiduzzaman Selim further said he had just finished the shooting in the protagonist character in Zahidur Rahim Anjan’s film Rain Coat.
‘The government-grant winning film is now in its post-production stage,’ said Selim, adding that Rain Coat was based on a story by Akhtaruzzaman Ilias.
The film focuses a college teacher’s peril and eventual involvement in the war of independence in 1971.
Selim further said he was simultaneously busy with small screen productions and theatre. ‘I’m directing and acting in a special teleplay titled Ahangkar to be aired on SATV on Ekushey February. Moreover, I’m making another special teleplay titled Chithi to be aired on Channel i in on Independence Day,’ Selim informed.
‘I’m also regularly appearing on stage in Dhaka Theatre’s productions’, he added.
Shahiduzzaman Selim began his acting career in his student life with Jahangirnagar Theatre. He joined popular Dhaka Theatre in 1983 and since then has been regularly performing in theatre productions.
He emerged in small screen through his performance in drama serial Jonaki Joley, aired on BTV in 1989. He started directing teleplays and serials a decade ago.
So far the actor has performed in six feature films.
