Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) on Sunday officially announced the 25-member shooting and 11-member weightlifting teams for the 11th SA Games.
The weightlifting team comprises eight lifters and three officials while the shooting team has 25 shooters.
Convener of the SA Games media committee Asaduzzaman Noor, MP, Chef de Mission of Bangladesh contingent Mizanur Rahman Manu, general manager Bangladesh contingent Mahfuza Akter Kiron, BOA CEO Col. (Rtd) M. Waliullah were present on the occasion.
General secretary of Bangladesh Weightlifting Federation Mohiuddin Ahmed expressed firm determinism of showing a good show. ‘Our lifters have improved a lot and they are now nearer to the standards of Indian and Pakistani lifters, however within our limitations we hope to perform better than the previous edition of Colombo where we won just one silver and five bronzes. We will perform better this time’ said the general secretary of the federation.
The federation officials pinned hope around experienced campaigner Akramul Huq and Hamidul Islam who have shown improvement in the year long training. Akramul Huq has been lifting 105 and 128 Kg’s in the snatch and clean jerk. His previous best was 100 and 113 kg’s. Hamidul has touched the 145 Kg’s in the snatch and 152 Kg’s in clean and jerk battering his previous best of 117 and 120.
Meanwhile, Ishtiaq Ahmed Bablu the general secretary of National Shooting Federation, chose to take a pre-cautious policy while revealing the aspirations of the shooting team. ‘We are hopeful of winning gold medals in different events but at the moment we are not in a position to reveal our scores, I think it creates an added pressure upon the shooters, as 18 of our shooters are relatively newcomer in the international arena’ said Bablu.
Bangladesh won just two silvers in the last edition of the games in Colombo and Bablu hoped the shooters will wipe out the shocking performance with success.
He said Bangladesh has a good prospect in winning gold in women’s 10M. air rifle event. He also hoped Asif Hossain Khan the ace shooter, will shine producing his best. Korean coach Hwang In Kwon stated that his shooters have gone through hard practice session in preparing themselves for the final challenge.
