The finance minister, AMA Muhith, on Wednesday said that no ‘shouting’ would help Muhammad Yunus to get back Grameen Bank.
‘Yunus may shout a lot, but he would not be able to regain the Grameen Bank,’ Muhith told reporters after a meeting of the cabinet committee on economic affairs at the secretariat.
Yunus has been alleging that the present government is set to grab the bank since he was ousted in 2011 from the office of the managing director of the bank founded by Yunus and the government jointly in 1983.
Muhith said that he could not understand as to why Yunus was shouting when Muhith already told parliament that the government had no intention to grab the Nobel Peace Prize winning micro-credit entity.
The finance minister e reiterated that the government had no intention to grab the micro-credit entity and it would hold 25 per cent stake in the bank as usual.
He also said that the government would formulate a guideline for electing Grameen Bank directors, as there was no such policy now.
Muhith said the government was also working on amendment to the Grameen Bank Ordinance 1983 and enactment of a new law in line with the directives given by the High Court.
He said that amendment to the ordinance would take some time as the government wanted to incorporate some recommendations made by the commission on the Grameen Bank.
He said that the commission appointed by the government for giving suggestions to streamline the bank’s operation was yet to submit the final report.
The final report is expected to be submitted any day, he added.
Muhith said that the acceptance of resignation of Garmeen Bank chairman Mozammel Haq would take time because of some technical reasons.
The government has asked Mozammel to continue as the bank chairman till submission of the report of the commission, Muhith said.
Bank and financial institution division at a meeting on Wednesday reviewed the draft amendment to the 1983 ordinance, officials said.
Presided over by the division secretary Aslam Alam, the meeting asked different ministries and divisions concerned to give their opinion on the draft by August 25.
The ministries and divisions were requested to give special focus on regulator of the bank while giving their opinions, as there was no specific regulator of the bank right now, the officials said.
