Ace Bangladesh all-rounder Sakib al Hasan nearly missed out on world-record bowling figures in Twenty20 matches as he took the Caribbean Premier League
by storm in his third outing for Barbados Tridents on Saturday.
Sakib mesmerised Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel after he recorded figures of 6-6 in four overs, the second best bowling figure ever in the history of T20, behind Arul Suppiah who scalped six wickets for five runs representing Somerset against Glamorgan in a Friends Life T20 game two years ago.
Barbados romped to victory with four wickets and 12 overs to spare as Sakib ran through the T & T’s batting order.
The world’s premier all-rounder in ODIs, Sakib almost single-handedly skittled out T & T for just 52 in 12.5 overs as he also grabbed two catches, that of both the openers Davy Jacobs and Justin Guillen.
The Magura lad started the slide in his very first delivery as he accounted for former New Zealand captain Ross Taylor’s wicket, trapping him in front for 11.
Sakib came on to bowl his second over in the eighth over of the innings and conceded three runs without taking a wicket, his bowling figure reading 1-4.
He bowled his third and penultimate over in the 10th over of the innings, which was a triple-wicket maiden.
Dwayne Bravo was the first to depart as he was foxed by an arm-ball from Sakib to be adjudged leg before wicket off the over’s first delivery. Nicolas Pooran was the next to head off to the dressing room after he presented a catch to Barbados skipper Kieron Pollard at short-leg off Sakib’s fourth delivery.
Sakib’s third dismissal of the over and his fourth wicket of the innings was that of all-rounder Kevon Cooper, rattling the stumps to end his third over with remarkable figures of 4-4.
Sakib then clean bowled Samuel Badree before sending back Ireland all-rounder Kevin O’Brien with Pollard taking a brilliant catch at silly point to finish with 6-6 in four overs, including a maiden.
Chasing T & T’s paltry score of 52, Barbados suffered a few hiccups before eventually reaching their target with Sakib falling cheaply after making five.
The Bangladesh all-rounder was adjudged the man-of-the-match, his second accolade in three matches for Barbados.
Barbados are so far unbeaten in three matches.
