Police, on Wednesday, arrested Helal Akber Chowdhury Babar, a Bangladesh Juba League (BJL) central committee member and a prime accused in the double murder incident in CRB area, over securing a tender of the Bangladesh Railway (BR) East Zone. Babar was arrested, along with his five cronies, from Gulshan area in the capital. A joint team of Chittagong’s Kotowali Police Station, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Gulshan Police Station conducted a drive in the wee hours of Wednesday, and arrested Babar and his homies from his Gulshan
hideout.
AKM Mohiuddin Selim, officer-in-charge of Kotowali Police Station, said that after the clash, which left a child and a BJL activist dead, Babar had left the port city. “He was hiding in a house in Gulshan. A joint team of police and the DB arrested him, along with five of his gang members,” he added.
He said that a team of police with the accused had left for Chittagong in the morning.
“Of the five others arrested in the case, three—Shah Alam, Chhoton Barua and Robi Dey—are accused in the double murder case,” he said, adding that they would be interrogated in the evening. “It’s been learnt during the primary investigation that Babar was at the CRB area and near the spot where the clash took place. Both sides exchanged bullets during the clash,” the OC said.
“The number of people arrested so far in connection with the case is 58. Fifty two of them were produced before court on Tuesday and a seven-day remand prayer was filed. However, the court granted one-day remand of 44 of those arrested,” OC Selim said, adding that the accused would be sent to police remand on Thursday for interrogation.
Two people, a child and a BJL activist, were killed in a clash between two rival groups of BJL and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the youth and student wing of the ruling Awami League (AL), on Monday afternoon, over securing a BR tender.
The clash took place at the BR’s Eastern Zone headquarters at Seven Road point under Kotowali police station in Chittagong on the day of Shobe Borat between supporters of AL city committee president and former mayor Alhaj ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and expelled AL leader AZM Nasiruddin.
