Film enthusiasts of the country will soon get an opportunity to watch last year’s multi-Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” on big screen. Production house Impress Telefilm Limited and mobile phone operator Aktel have brought the film to Bangladeshi theatres.
The film will be screened at theatres in and outside Dhaka, starting from October 9. Prior to the release, the Bangladesh premiere of the film was held yesterday at the Star Cineplex, Bashundhara Shopping Mall.
Faridur Reza Sagor, managing director, Impress Telefilm Ltd; Michael Kuehner, managing director, Aktel and Shegufta Yasmin, head of Corporate Affairs, Aktel spoke prior to the premiere. Sagor and Kuehner formally launched the event through opening the can of the print.
Apart from Star Cineplex, the film will also be screened at Balaka Cineworld (Dhaka) and at Upahar (Rajshahi). The daily Prothom Alo, Channel i and Radio Today are the media partners of the film.
“Slumdog Millionaire” narrates the tale of Jamal Malik, an 18-year old orphan from a slum of Mumbai.
Jamal Malik is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on the Indian version of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”
But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid be so well informed? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal recounts the story of his life in the slums where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loves and loses repeatedly.
The film won Academy Awards in seven different categories, including best film, best director and best music. AR Rahman bagged his first Oscar for the music of the film.
The Danny Boyle film, produced by Fox Searchlight Picture and Warner Brothers, features an ensemble cast of Indian actors including Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan. The screenplay was written by Simon Beaufoy, based on the novel “Q & A” by Vikas Swarup.
