Rain might have extinguished the prospect of a fiery encounter in Dhaka Premier League but nothing could take away the brilliance of Victoria’s Sohrawardi Shuvo, whose century sunk Prime Bank on Thursday. The match at BKSP was well poised as Victoria, who were chasing Prime’s 274-7, were 211-2 in 42.1 overs when heavy downpour forced the game to be called off and Victoria clinched the game by nine runs in Duckworth/Lewis method.
Sohrawardi, who is known for his left-arm spin bowling, opened the innings and remained not on 105 off 118 balls to fetch his first List ‘A’ century that guided his side home.
He got tremendous support from Al-Amin, who has been a revelation in this tournament through his consistency, as they added 155 runs in their unbroken partnership before the rain arrived at 4:10 pm.
Al-Amin was not out on 82, his fourth fifty of the tournament which could have been translated into his second century of the league easily if he was denied by rain.
Rain also deprived him an opportunity to score to avail the top spot of the run scorers.
The 22-year’s innings of 90-ball with six boundaries and a six took his tally to 372 runs, just four short of leading run scorer Upul Tharanga, from six games.
Earlier in the day, holders Prime Bank got off to a decent start after being sent into bat as their openers Mehedi Maruf and Shanaj Ahmed made a partnership of 81 off 16.4 overs.
Shanaj got out for 36 but Mehedi went on to score his half century before he was got out for 63, the highest of the innings.
Wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan made 40 and Taibur Rahman scored 45 but none of them could convert their starts into a big one.
Indian batsman Sachin Rana gave a late impetus with 35 off just 23 balls but in the end that was not enough for them.
Kamrul Islam and Enamul Haque grabbed two wickets apiece for Victoria.
With the win Victoria ascended to the second position of the point table with nine points, just one behind league leaders Mohammedan from six games.
Prime on the other hand are in the seventh position with six points from equal number of games.
