Poor infrastructure and acute shortage of manpower is hampering healthcare service at Sylhet Chest Diseases Hospital.
The hospital authorities cannot provide proper treatment for the patients due to severe staff crisis coupled with poor infrastructure, according to hospital sources. Out of the total 58 posts of medical officers, nurses and other staff, 28 remain vacant, badly affecting treatment at the 56-bed hospital, they said. The hospital has been running in two dilapidated tin-shed houses since it was set up in the city’s Shahi Edgah area in 1950, the sources added.
Despite repeated request, the authorities concerned are yet to take any step to construct permanent building for the hospital, they said, adding even a staff quarters has not been built on the hospital compound.
Besides, there is no boundary wall of the hospital compound, causing a sense of insecurity for the medical staff and patients as well.
Several multi-storey buildings have been built on the hospital land for the Family Welfare Inspector Training Centre, Institute of Health Technology and National Heart Foundation Hospital, he added.
Of the total 58 posts, one post of medical officer out of three, eight posts of senior staff nurses out of 12, four posts of staff nurses out of seven, all the six posts of assistant nurses and the lone post of laboratory technician lie vacant, hospital sources said.
Senior medical consultant at the hospital, Monirul Islam, told New Age that treatment is being hampered in absence of proper infrastructural facilities and sufficient workforce.
