A 15-year-old girl, unable to bear constant harassment by a local hoodlum, attempted to take her own life by
drinking caustic acid in Sujanagar of Pabna on Friday night.
The victim, Rusia Khatun, daughter of late Tajuddin of village Kuripara, is now fighting a grim battle for life in hospital.
A case was filed against the alleged stalker, Rezaul Islam, who went into hiding after the incident.
Rusia, one of the brad earners of the poor family, worked along with her mother Ayesha Khatun in a handloom factory in the village.
Police and the locals said that Rezaul Islalm, son of Hakimuddin, used to harass the girl on her way to work and back home. He stopped Rusia when she was returning home on Friday afternoon and tried to rape her. As the girl cried out for help, locals rushed to the spot and rescued her.
Out of shame and disgust, she attempted to commit suicide on that night by taking caustic acid. She was first taken to Sujanagar upazila health complex and shifted to Pabna Medical College Hospital on Sunday as her condition deteriorated, hospital sources said.
Rusia’s mother said, ‘Rezaul constantly harassed my daughter on her way to work and back home. A few days ago village arbitrators ordered her to stop stalking my daughter and he agreed. But he repeated the crime.’
Ayesha Khatun filed a case against Rezaul with Sujanagar police station on Saturday. Sub-inspector of Sujanagar police station Nazmul Hossain said police were trying to arrest the alleged stalker.
