Industries minister asks contracting firm
Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu on Monday ordered the contracting firm to start construction works of the central effluent treatment plant in the tannery estate at Savar in one week.
He gave the order to the JLPCL-DCL-JV, a joint venture of Chinese firm Jiangsu Lingzhi Environmental Protection Company Limited and local firm Development Construction Limited, to expedite the construction of CETP.
None will be spared if there is any dilly-dully in implementation of the decision, he said.
At an inter-ministerial meeting to review the progress of relocation of tanneries to Savar tannery estate and construction of CETP project, Amu also asked the factory owners for expediting the shifting process of tanneries to Savar from the city’s Hazaribagh.
According to ministry officials, till now, 82 tannery owners have submitted layout plans of their factories against the plots allotted to them at Savar leather industrial park. Of which, the ministry has already approved 35 layout plans.
Industries minister assured the factory owners that the government would start disbursement of Tk 250 crore in phases as compensation after relocation process starts.
Environment and forest minister Anwar Hossain Manju emphasised on continuation of construction of CETP and relocation of factories at the same time for timely completion of the project.
Industries secretary Moinuddin Abdullah, environment and forest secretary Md Shafiqur Rahman Patwari, Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation chairman Shyam Sunder Sikder, and representatives from the Bangladesh Tanners Association, Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association, among others, were present at the meeting.
