The BNP-led 18-party alliance has renewed its call for immediate step-down of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to end the country’s ongoing political crisis over the non-party poll-time administration. “The government is unleashing repression and oppression on opposition supporters and is implicating them with politically motivated charges. Despite this, our movement will not be thwarted. Rather, it will be intensified,” said BNP spokesperson Salauddin Ahmed, in a video message from a secrete place, on Sunday. “There is still time for the government to realise the opposition’s demand for election under a non-party poll-time management. Please ensure immediate unconditional release of our detained leaders and withdraw the cases which were lodged against them deliberately, paving the path of an impartial and inclusive general election,” he added.
Later, in another press statement, Salauddin, also joint secretary general of the party, alleged that the country’s judiciary and administration have already been held hostage by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Describing the government as fascist and autocratic, the BNP leader said it has declared war against the people by indulging in mass killings, arrest and repression.
