Turnover lowest since January 21
Dhaka stocks ended flat for the second trading session on Monday with the lowest turnover since January this year due to thin turnout of investors amid political violence.
The turnover of Dhaka Stock Exchange declined to Tk 107.91 crore, lowest since January 21 when the turnover was Tk 101.57 crore.DSEX, the benchmark general index of the bourse, finished at 3,472.17 points, advancing by 0.10 per cent or 3.60 points on the day.
Market operators said a very few investors participated in the trading on the day due to clashes between law enforcement agencies and Hefazat-e-Islam activists.
They said investors avoided coming to the Motijheel area on the day due to Sunday’s clashes.
‘Political instability and clashes were the main reasons for the investors’ absence on the trading floor. Most of the investors are watching the political situation before making their next move of investment,’ a senior merchant banker said.
The old general index of the bourse, DGEN, advanced by 0.21 per cent, or 7.80 points, to close at 3,663.11 points on Monday.
The DSE blue-chip index, DS30, advance to 1,287.81 points, gaining 0.39 per cent or 5.05 points.
‘After yesterday’s [Sunday’s] heavy strife in the capital, investors were largely pessimistic today amid heightened tension in political arena. As volatility took one-step further, investors hardly had the motive to invest more, resulting in a flat session,’ IDLC Investments said in its daily market commentary.
Of the 265 issues traded on the day, 89 advanced, 137 declined, and 39 remained unchanged.
Non-life insurance sector lost 1.44 per cent and engineering sector lost 0.96 per cent.
Beximco Ltd topped the turnover leaders’ list with its shares worth Tk 3.88 crore changing hands on the day.
Bengal Windsor Thermoplastics, United Airways, CVO Petrochemicals, Beximco Pharma, RN Spinning, Titas Gas were also on the list.
Rahim Textile gained the most on Monday as its share price went up by 9.94 per cent.
Kay and Que was the worst loser of the day as it lost 17.26 per cent.
