Leftist student organisations platform Progressive Students’ Alliance will enforce today a strike in all educational institutions across the country, demanding capital punishment of the
owners of garment factories at Rana Plaza of Savar.
They will boycott classes and examinations between 11:00am and 1:00pm, protesting the building collapse that left around 400 people dead.
The students’ leaders announced the programme at a press conference at Dhaka University Madhu’s Canteen on April 27.
Their other demands included ensuring safety measures for the garment workers in the country, providing the Savar victims with Tk 5 lakh as compensation, proper medicare for the wounded labourers and implementation of democratic labour act.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union president SM Shuvo, Saifuzzaman Shakon of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front and Probir Saha of Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, among others, attended the press conference.
They said they would lay siege to the BGMEA building, demanding capital punishment of Rana Plaza’s owner and other factory owners who allegedly compelled workers to join work though engineers had ordered the building to be evacuated after cracks developed in the building.
